National Motivation and Inspiration Day

Image of a smartphone's lock screen displaying a logo for the Colorado Developmental Disabilities Council on top and the date of "Friday, January 2nd" below. A digital clock follows and shows "8:00." Below the clock are two notification reminder bubbles. The first reminder reads, "Today is National Motivation and Inspiration Day. Take action this weekend." The second reminder reads, "Register for the Annual Council Celebration" followed by a bit.ly link to register.

January 2nd is recognized as National Motivation and Inspiration Day. This day was officially recognized by the U.S. Congress in late 2001 as a response to the 9/11 tragedy to help create unity and renew focus on inspiration and hope.

National Motivation and Inspiration Day is a reminder of our New Year’s resolution(s) and goals we’ve set for the year. It is our reminder to celebrate life, even in our roughest times. 2026 may be a challenging year at both the state and federal levels, but this can be a reminder to keep moving and advocating in times of pain and grief.

Ways to Celebrate:

  1. Set realistic and intentional goals.
  2. Check something off your to-do list.
  3. Listen or watch inspiring Youtube videos, TED Talks, or podcasts.
  4. Take action.
  5. Remember this is a marathon, not a sprint. Give yourself grace when challenges arise.
  6. Reflect on what you have accomplished already.
  7. Release the pressure to “catch up.” You’re doing great.

What’s the difference between Motivation and Inspiration?

Oftentimes, we use both words interchangeably, but they don’t mean the same thing.

  • Motivation is the “HOW.” It is what helps you execute your plan to accomplish your goals.
  • Inspiration is the “WHY.” It helps you define what you want.

Both work together. Inspiration provides the deep, meaningful “WHY,” while motivation helps you take the necessary steps to accomplish your goals.

Today is a bridge between the excitement of a new year and the hard work ahead for the rest of the year.

Today is not about being perfect; it’s about being present. So, take a deep breath and that first step. You got this!
