“Learning From Each Other – Things We Share”
Colorado Developmental Disabilities Council
Call for Presentations
Breakout Session Application
The Developmental Disabilities Council of Colorado is
sponsoring the 2009 conference on Cultural Competence and Responsiveness. The
conference will be October 9 & 10, 2009 at the Summit Conference and Event
Center in Aurora, Colorado.
The Colorado Developmental Disabilities Council is made up
of citizens who care about the lives of individuals with developmental
disabilities. Sixty percent (60%) of the Council is made of people with
developmental disabilities or family members of people with developmental
disabilities. Cultural competence, diversity and inclusion are fundamental
values embedded in the goals of the Developmental Disabilities Council.
The Council strives to make the following goals a reality:
- People with developmental disabilities earn real pay
working in real jobs for real employers.
- Communities actively include people with developmental
disabilities.
- People with developmental disabilities control their
own lives, choosing who they live with, where they live and who provides
their support and services.
- The service system is easy to understand and
transitions are seamless.
- People with developmental disabilities enjoy the same
rights and responsibilities all other people.
Proposals will be evaluated based on the quality of the
proposed presentation, and the presentation’s support for the mission and values
of the Colorado Developmental Disabilities Council. The conference program
committee will review all proposals and notify lead presenters by mid-July 2009.
The objectives of the Conference are:
- To present the value of cultural competence in
leadership development and to promote training by people with disabilities
and family members who will be the future leaders of Colorado
- To promote coalition building and be the voice
of cultural competence and cultural diversity interest and concerns among
Colorado citizens with developmental disabilities
- To improve skills to support and expand
participation of people with disabilities in cross-disability and
culturally-diverse leadership coalitions
- To learn the value of implementing policies
that will advance the inclusion and participation of people with
disabilities in all aspects of community life.
We are looking for presentations to address the issues of
cultural and linguistic competence. Because the Council believes people with
developmental disabilities are valuable participants in their communities we
want to ensure that people with disabilities are included in discussions related
to cultural competence and responsiveness. The Council is guided by the broad
federal definition of developmental disability, which includes people with
physical, cognitive and mental health concerns that affect their activities of
daily living.
The Colorado Developmental Disabilities Council is guided
by its Five-Year Plan for 2007-2011 (http://www.coddc.org/5_year-plan.asp)
The Council’s goal in the Area of Emphasis of Quality Assurance is to promote
and support the development of leadership and self-advocacy capacity among
people with disabilities and their family members. Objective 3 states: “Serve
as a representative voice of the cultural competence and cultural diversity
interests and concerns among Colorado citizens with developmental
disabilities.”
The purpose of the conference is to provide people with
disabilities, their family members and professionals with an opportunity to
learn, share and support all people in Colorado, including individuals with
disabilities. At this time we are asking that individuals (including people with
disabilities and family members), groups and/or communities submit the following
application describing their proposed breakout session.
